Privacy Policy for NexLAB
This policy discloses the privacy practices for the NexLAB (Next-Generation Experiments and Learning for Advanced Biotech) web-based content management system developed and operated by the Institute for Future Intelligence (IFI), a non-profit research organization based in Massachusetts that is dedicated to promoting STEM education and research. This policy applies solely to information collected by NexLAB for service and research purposes.
Data Collection, Use, and Sharing
If you would like to access and store your NexLAB files on the cloud, you will need to register with NexLAB so that it can create an account for you. Currently, NexLAB allows you to sign in using the so-called OAuth-based Google Sign-In, which is provided by Google to simplify the registration process with a third-party app like NexLAB with a single click. All the user authentication steps are securely handled by Google.
When you sign into NexLAB using this service from Google, NexLAB collects only a unique alphanumeric string (such asP2wNcxhEdas8BN11hBstfZdDau2
) for use to create and access your NexLAB account
— No personally identifiable data such as your name and email is gathered from you.
IFI has no knowledge about your Google account. The alphanumeric ID string is used only with NexLAB and cannot be used to log into any other app or website.
With a NexLAB account, you receive benefits such as storing your files on the cloud, sharing your notebooks and supplemental materials with others. While you are using these free services provided by NexLAB, we may also collect usage data to support our research on how people learn and work with NexLAB. The purpose is to use the information to improve our products and services for future uses. In some cases, we may share this information with researchers outside IFI through inter-institutional collaboration agreements. Again, this information contains no personally identifiable data about anyone.
Your Access to and Control Over Information
If you do not feel comfortable about the above privacy statement, you may opt out of any future relationship with NexLAB at any time. You can request the following by emailing dylan@intofuture.org:
- See what data we have about you, if any;
- Change/correct any data we have about you;
- Ask us to delete any data we have about you;
- Express any concern you have about our use of your data.
In order to identify your data, please provide the alphanumeric ID string in your communication with us so that we can review your request. Your alphanumeric ID string can be found in the "My Account" page, “User ID” field within NexLAB.
Updates
This policy may change from time to time and all updates will be posted on this page.
